Here you will find all you need to get up and flying with Harbor Soaring Society. Note: HSS also has a (non-flying) "Special" membership that does not require AMA membership or any of the requirements listed below.   Let's get started...

 

Requirements                                                           

1. Membership in Harbor Soaring Society requires membership in the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA). Membership includes a $2,500,000 public liability insurance policy, and a monthly magazine called Model Aviation.  Click here for online sign-up, or Click here for FAX or USPS mail option.                                                                                                                         

2. The FAA aircraft registration rule, requires an FAA registration number be affixed to the outside of all of your radio control model aircraft Click here and select “I fly under The Exception For Recreational Flyers” option. The charge is $5 for three years, for all of your R/C aircraft.                                                               ​

3. The FAA requires that all recreational flyers must pass a simple aeronautical and safety test, otherwise known as the "TRUST" (The Recreational UAS Safety Test). It provides education and testing for recreational flyers on important safety and regulatory information. If you fly your model aircraft/drone recreationally, under the Exception for Recreational Flyers you must pass the test before you fly.  To take the test, go to Click here.  This is the AMA Site.  Take the test (Don’t worry, it is fail proof) then obtain your “Completion Certificate”.                                                                                                              

4. Harbor Soaring Society Membership Application*. Click here.

   • New Applicants (without name tag) (19 years and older): $15.00

   • Adult Member (renewal without name tag) (19 years and younger): $15.00

   • Junior Membership (without name tag) (19 years and younger): $0.00

   • Family Member (without name tag) (at same address): $5.00

   • Supporting Member (non-flying) includes newsletter. No voting, No City permit, AMA membership not required: $0.00 per year

   • Optional or Extra HSS Name Tag: $15.00

New applicants making application between November 1st and December 31st will pay the annual rate indicated above and such dues will make the new member paid in full from November 1st through the following year.

 

A signature on the HSS membership application is required from all renewing Harbor Soaring Society members, and applicants, agreeing to comply with the current AMA Safety Code and the current HSS General Field rules and Field Safety Rules found  Click Here.

A City of Costa Mesa permit is required to fly at Fairview Park.  Cost is $50/yr for an Adult Permit. $55/yr for a Non-Resident Adult Permit. $30/yr for a Learner's Permit (Ages 6-14). $35/yr for a Non-Resident Learner's Permit (Ages 6-14).  Click Here to download City of Costa Mesa Permit Application.
